Karyotypic diversity and cryptic speciation: Have we vastly underestimated moss species diversity?

چکیده

Karyotypic diversity is critical to catalyzing change in the evolution of all plants. By resulting meiotic incompatibility among sets homologous chromosomes, polyploidy and aneuploidy may facilitate reproductive isolation potential for speciation. Across plants, karyotypic variants form allopolyploids receive greater taxonomic attention relative autopolyploids aneuploids. In particular, prevalence significance autopolyploidy bryophytes little understood. Using Fritsch’s 1991 compendium bryophyte karyotypes with augmentation from karyological studies published since, we have quantified ~1500 extant morphological species mosses. We assessed phylogenetic distribution data, frequency aneuploidy, methodological correlates diversity. At least two ploidy levels were recorded 17% potentially increasing current mosses over 15,000 species. find that a given species, number unique correlated populations sampled. The evidence suggests cytological likely underlies yet undescribed mosses, intensive sampling needed tool its discovery.

Karyotypic diversity and speciation in Agrodiaetus butterflies.

That chromosomal rearrangements may play an important role in maintaining postzygotic isolation between well-established species is part of the standard theory of speciation. However, little evidence exists on the role of karyotypic change in speciation itself--in the establishment of reproductive barriers between previously interbreeding populations. The large genus Agrodiaetus (Lepidoptera: L...

Cryptic Speciation in Brazilian Epiperipatus (Onychophora: Peripatidae) Reveals an Underestimated Diversity among the Peripatid Velvet Worms

BACKGROUND Taxonomical studies of the neotropical Peripatidae (Onychophora, velvet worms) have proven difficult, due to intraspecific variation and uniformity of morphological characters across this onychophoran subgroup. We therefore used molecular approaches, in addition to morphological methods, to explore the diversity of Epiperipatus from the Minas Gerais State of Brazil. METHODOLOGY/PRI...

Assessment of SCoT and DAMD molecular markers in genetic diversity and species delimitation of three moss species grown in Iran

This study was conducted to assess the efficacy of SCoT and DAMD molecular markers in genetic diversity  of three moss species and compare them with ISSR marker. Another objective was to evaluate the suitability of these DNA markers in species identification (delimitation) in three moss species, including Neckera complanata, Homalothecium sericeum and Neckera cris...

Phylogeny of Philippine slender skinks (Scincidae: Brachymeles) reveals underestimated species diversity, complex biogeographical relationships, and cryptic patterns of lineage diversification.

The spectacular, virtually endemic radiation of Philippine semi-fossorial skinks of the genus Brachymeles represent one of the few radiations of scincid lizards to possess both fully limbed and limbless species. And yet, nothing is known of the phylogenetic relationships of this exceptional group. Morphologically similar body plans have made it difficult to assess species-level diversity, and t...

Cryptic species as a window on diversity and conservation.

The taxonomic challenge posed by cryptic species (two or more distinct species classified as a single species) has been recognized for nearly 300 years, but the advent of relatively inexpensive and rapid DNA sequencing has given biologists a new tool for detecting and differentiating morphologically similar species. Here, we synthesize the literature on cryptic and sibling species and discuss t...
